Why am I passionate about this?

I have been writing fiction since an early age, and I naturally create central female characters that I hope are warm, funny, and in some way flawed. Modules of my university degree dealt with psychology and sociology, and I automatically studied other people to inspire elements of my character. Lee Child is quoted as saying readers remember characters more than the plot, so when compiling my list, I recalled five female leads that have made me laugh, cringe, and relate to in equal measure. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Bridget Jones's Diary

C Fleming Why did I love this book?

What I love about this book is the full-circle journey that Bridget takes throughout the story. It was so easy to relate to Bridget’s struggles, such as ‘eat less, drink less, smoke less.’ The book gives us all hope. By the end, she still eats, drinks, and smokes, but she is happier and has moved forward.

I could relate to Bridget in many ways. As a young radio journalist in the 1990s, I was often sent to do live reports that went disastrously wrong. I’ve never made ‘blue soup,’ I’ve also had a fair share of kitchen calamities.  I think there’s a bit of Bridget in every woman, and I dare you to read the book and not recognize someone you know.

By Helen Fielding,

Why should I read it?

18 authors picked Bridget Jones's Diary as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The multi-million copy number one Bestseller

A dazzlingly urban satire on modern relationships?
An ironic, tragic insight into the demise of the nuclear family?
Or the confused ramblings of a pissed thirty-something?

As Bridget documents her struggles through the social minefield of her thirties and tries to weigh up the eternal question (Daniel Cleaver or Mark Darcy?), she turns for support to four indispensable friends: Shazzer, Jude, Tom and a bottle of chardonnay.

Welcome to Bridget's first diary: mercilessly funny, endlessly touching and utterly addictive.

Helen Fielding's first Bridget Jones novel, Bridget Jones's Diary, sparked a phenomenon that has seen…

Book cover of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

C Fleming Why did I love this book?

I’ve never read a book as quickly as I read this one. Our eponymous lead character is quirky and odd, but the story is written with so much empathy, depth, and humor that I was rooting for her from the start.

I loved how the relationship between Eleanor and Raymond plays out and avoids the predictable ‘boy meets girl’ ending. It doesn’t surprise me that the book is ‘in development’ as a movie, as the story plays out like a film when you read it. Definitely read this one first before you see the film! (It probably won’t take long as I couldn’t put this book down.)

A Diary in the Age of Water By Nina Munteanu,

This climate fiction novel follows four generations of women and their battles against a global giant that controls and manipulates Earth’s water. Book cover of Confessions of a Shopaholic

C Fleming Why did I love this book?

The irony surrounding Becky Bloomwood (aka ‘The Shopaholic’) makes me smile. She’s a financial journalist who is constantly in a pickle with money. Her financial worries cause her stress, and the best way to deal with them is to go shopping, which continues the debt spiral.

Becky is flawed but lovable, and I can relate to her predicament. How many of us try to justify our small actions that we know deep down are wrong? The book is harmless, light-hearted, easy to read, and starts off a series of other Shopaholic books. I can’t remember the plots of many of them, but I certainly remember Becky Bloomwood.

Book cover of Christmas in Coolsbay

C Fleming Why did I love this book?

I mistakenly read this book in the summer, but I love that it’s so Christmassy.  Scenes involving snow, mince pies, and egg nog make for a perfect snuggly Christmas read.

The lead character, Demi Holly, is getting everything wrong on the same theme as the other books I’m recommending. She’s resigned from her job, has an affair with a loser, and can’t get on with her sister. Despite this, I found plenty of good in Demi and loved that she was funny, real, and relatable. I laughed out loud several times at Belle’s writing, and there are some excellent, memorable side characters.

Book cover of Me Before You

C Fleming Why did I love this book?

Louisa Clark is a lively heroine in the most somber, complicated circumstances, which elevates this book from a normal rom-com to something tender and profound. JoJo Moyes has done a fantastic job combining humor and sadness in this tale of love and hope.

The book deals with the perplexing debate around assisted suicide through the characters, and as a reader accustomed to upbeat endings, I couldn’t see how this would end well. And I’m glad it didn’t. Sometimes, we need a bittersweet blow to the stomach and a good old cry.

What is my book about?

My book tells the tale of Abigail, a 25-year-old fashion graduate drifting through life, taking on temp jobs in London. After making a mistake at work that brings down the banking system, she is forced to go on the run with nothing but a tent and a handful of cash. She hides out in a small hamlet in the Cotswolds, wondering how to rebuild her life.

It’s a gentle tale with romance, humor, and some twists and turns. Abigail meets a cast of colorful characters who help her realize what’s important in life, and readers’ affectionate reactions to Abigail made me realize that I was going to have to write a sequel.
